NBA mock draft 2019: Duke’s R.J. Barrett to Knicks?

In the latest 2019 NBA mock draft, the Knicks landed Duke forward R.J. Barrett.

It’s officially draft season watch for the Knicks.

As the current on-court product careers toward a bottom-three record in the NBA, all eyes will be on the 2019 NBA Draft lottery and a potential franchise-changing pick for this team.

Then, and only then, can the Knicks potentially find a special player to help set the team on a different course through the draft.

While many have projected Duke’s Zion Williamson as the clear-cut guy for the Knicks, what about his teammate, R.J. Barrett?

In Basketball Insiders’ latest 2019 NBA mock draft, it’s Barrett landing with the Knicks with the No. 2 overall pick–one spot after the Phoenix Suns took Williamson.

Here’s what Draft Express said in its scouting report of the Toronto, Canada native.

-Tremendous physical profile for his age. Developed, yet still has quite a bit of room to fill out. Wide shoulders. Long arms with a 6′ 10 wingspan. Measured 6′ 6.5 in shoes.

-Not afraid of the moment. Was rarely underwhelmed by the fact that he was by far the youngest player in attendance. Plays with a level of confidence rare for his age.

-Herky-jerky style of play. Makes an effort to play at different speeds and change directions, although he can do so with more force. Uses his long strides to step around help defenders and his length to finish from different angles. Uses scoop shots. At his best as a straight line slasher either in transition or the half court. Can mix in an occasional in and out crossover.

The best aspect there for Knicks brass and fans to think about: Barrett apparently isn’t afraid of the moment–something he’ll need if he lands in New York and plays at Madison Square Garden.
