NJ Transit investigating car fires at North Jersey facility

The fires were reported around 4:30 p.m., an NJ Transit official said.

New Jersey Transit is investigating car fires that damaged four vehicles at a maintenance facility in Kearny on Tuesday afternoon.

Nancy Snyder, a spokeswoman for NJ Transit, said the fires were reported around 4:30 p.m. at the agency’s Meadows Maintenance Complex, although it’s currently unclear whether the vehicles are privately-owned or belong to NJ Transit.

No one was injured in the incident, during which three vehicles caught fire and a fourth was damaged, Snyder added.

The NJ Transit facility, located along the Newark-Jersey City Turnpike, is the site where rail cars are serviced and maintained.

A message left for the Kearny Fire Department was not returned.

The investigation is ongoing, Snyder said.
