Rescue crews to continue search for missing Weehawken kayaker on Fourth of July

Rescue crews in Vermont suspended their search Tuesday night for a missing kayaker from Weehawken but will resume it in the morning.

Rescue crews in Vermont suspended their search Tuesday night for a missing kayaker from Weehawken, but will resume their efforts in the morning.

Eric Plett, 41, went missing after his kayak overturned Monday night on Lake Champlain near Shelburne Point, according to a release from the Vermont State Police.

Police said that Plett’s friends arrived to the area about 30 minutes later and could not find him or his kayak.

Rescuers in boats and helicopters searched for Plett on Monday night and continued to search throughout the day on Tuesday but were unable to find him. Tuesday’s search was suspended for the day at 7:40 p.m., and will resume at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, police said.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that Plett was able to make it to shore, but if he did, he has not contacted his family, the release states.

The Vermont State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard are assisting in search and rescue efforts and ask that mariners avoid the search area throughout the day.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident or who sees anything on Lake Champlain overnight to call the Vermont State Police in Williston at 802-878-7111.
